AMBAHAN

Ambahan is a traditional poetry that is often written on a bamboo tube and has seven-syllable lines. This artwork serves as a reminder of the country's historic past and vibrant present. The brilliant mind of Ginaw Bilog is responsible for the continued existence of this art.

It is a rhythmic poetic expression with seven syllable lines in a meter and rhythmic end-syllables. It is also frequently performed as a chant with no fixed musical pitch or musical instrument accompaniment. Also, it is intended to express, in an allegorical manner, specific situations or traits referred to by the person reciting the poem. Moreover, the poems, often recited with music at social gatherings and used to convey messages among the Hanunuo Mangyan, had topics like advising the young, bidding a friend goodbye, and asking for a place to stay.

Surat Mangyan, an indigenous alphabet used in the Philippines before the Spanish colonial era, is used to inscribe it on the material. In 1993, Mangyan Poet Ginaw Bilog, who also keeps records of the ambahan in a notebook, was honored for preserving his people's traditions.
